Description of the activity

Motivation.

The study of suprathermal ion production and fast ion losses are key problems in the develop of future fusion reactors, since these particles produce serious damage, contribute to the reduction of the heating efficiency and their production mechanisms are in some cases unknown. Previously, we have installed a fast ion loss detector (FILD) based on luminescent light induced on phosphor screens [1-4]

Proposal.

Within the present proposal, we plan to recommissioning the FILD at TJ-II which was removed from its observation window in order to repair the Mirnov coils in the previous experimental campaign. We plan to study the behaviour of fast ion losses in ECRH and NBI plasmas. The energy distribution of this population will be determined from the luminescent signal [3].

Description of required resources

Required resources:

• Number of plasma discharges or days of operation: We would need at least two operational days: one (compatible with other experiments) to adjust all the variables of the FILD system and another day to perform the experiment.

• Essential diagnostic systems: Main diagnostics will be radiation diagnostics (bolometers, X-rays, VUV spectrometer, etc.) and ECR radiometer data as well as other diagnostics with good time resolution. We need to compare the high energy ions collected by the CNPA

• Type of plasmas (heating configuration): We need standard configuration plasmas (100_44_64)

• Specific requirements on wall conditioning if any: We need discharges with NBI, ECRH and good control with stationary density along discharges. Good Thomson scattering plasma profiles are required.

• External users: need a local computer account for data access: No.


Preferred dates and degree of flexibility

Preferred dates: (XX-05-2019) We would like to perform the experiment during May 2019, when the NBI system works properly.
