At the boundary of the plasma (such as between plasma and divertor target), an electrostatic sheath forms and impacts energy flux leaving the plasma as it filters most electrons while attracting ions. [1] Heat flux qse at the sheath edge is related to the particle flux at the sheath edge Γse, electron temperature Te, and the sheath heat transmission coefficient γ by:

qse=γTeΓse

Sheath theory gives

γ=2.5TiTe+21δe0.5ln[(2πmemi)(1+TiTe)2(1δe)2]

where Ti is the ion temperature and δe is the secondary electron emission coefficient, both of which are difficult or impossible to measure at the divertor plate.[1][2] Setting Ti=Te and δe=0 gives γ=7, which is often used due to the simplicity of the assumptions.[3][4]
