The ICPP[1] is sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.

The first ICPP congress (Nagoya, 1980) was the result of combining the fourth Kiev International Conference on Plasma Theory and the fourth International Congress on Waves and Stability in Plasmas. Up to the 10th congress (2000), the denomination was "International Conference on Plasma Physics".
