Description of the activity
Fast ions have been found to impact plasma confinement [1]. Understanding the underlying physics is an essential task for future fusion reactors where plasmas will be dominated by fast particle dynamics. In particular, non-linear excitations of zonal structures by fast particle driven modes are predicted to play an important role on the nonlinear dynamics of AEs and related transport [2].
Non-linear coupling between AEs and low frequency zonal flows have been reported in TJ-II using Doppler reflectometry [[3]] and HIBP measurements.
The goal is to address the following questions:
1. Relation between fast particle driven modes and zonal structures: Is there any evidence of Zonal Flows (i.e. electric fields) or / and Zonal Fields (i.e. magnetic fields) driven by fast particles?. If yes, do they play any role on thermal transport Impact?
2. Non-linear interplay between high (AEs) and low frequency modes: do they play any role in the non-linear saturation mechanisms of AEs?
