Pellet induced Enhanced Confinement (PiEC) has been achieved with single pellet injection into NBI plasmas in TJ-II. In the 2021 autumn experimental campaign, PiEC plasmas were achieved with a single large pellet but further enhancement was achieved when additional pellets were injected (up to two additional pellets). It was demonstrated that the synergetic effect of multi-pellets, injected one shortly after another one, opens new NBI operating scenarios to achieve high confinement in TJ-II plasmas – Multi-Pellet induced Enhanced Confinement (MPiEC) mode.

It has been found that the injection of more than one pellet has a clear impact on the quality of the MPiEC mode. The critical pellet parameters seem to be: the time separation between pellets, the plasma radius where pellet particles are deposited after initial plasmoid drifting and the pellet size. These multi-pellet experiments were carried out with Co, counter and balanced NB injection configurations and the impact of magnentic configuration on confinement was found to depend to some extent on heating scenario. Unfortunally, the series needed to investigate these effects was incompleted due to a lack of dedicated discharges.

High plasma performance due to pellet injections is described in many devices although the underlying physics is still unclear. In TJ-II, during PiEC and MPiEC, the HIBPs show changes in Er (for rho<0.7) and a strong reduction in turbulence after multi-pellets injections (data analysis is still ongoing).
We propose series of multi-PIs into plasmas with different NBI heating scenarios (Co, counter, balanced, max. power in both injectors) in order to optimize MPiEC mode while varying pellet settings (size, pellet flight path, and time delays between them). We plan to increase the number of pellets up to four. We will also investigate the evolution of plasma potential and Er profiles (HIBPs and DR) as well as of plasma potential, Epol, and density fluctuations and coherence between them – all ingredients of turbulent particle flux (HIBP). These data will be supported by independent measurements of the plasma density profiles (HIBPs and DR) and its fluctuations for these plasma conditions.
In addition, the evolution of poloidal turbulence rotation for plasma potential and density perturbation will be investigated during PiEC and MPiEC modes (HIBP).
Long-Range Correlation (HIBP1-HIBP2A) plasma potential (LRC) and Medium-Range Correlation (HIBP2A-HIBP2B) plasma potential (LRC) will be also investigated during PIEC and MPIEC modes.

The influence of fast electrons, that reside in the plasma core of TJ-II, on pellet ablation and fuelling efficiency is a topic that was recently highlighted.<ref>K. J. McCarthy et al., Nucl. Fusion 57 056039 (2018)</ref> The work reported therein was part of the current effort to benchmark the stellarator versions of the pellet simulation codes HPI2 for TJ-II and W7-X.<ref>N. Panadero et al, Nucl. Fusion 58 026025 (2017)</ref> It was found that simulations made using the stellarator-adapted version of the HPI2 code did not fully agree with experimental observations for plasmas with a significant population of fast electrons in the core. While the presence of such a population gives rise to local enhanced pellet ablation it also appears to modify the fast outwards drifting of pellet particles and thereafter particle deposition and fuelling efficiency.<ref>K. J. McCarthy et al., accepted in Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion (2018)</ref> In particular, increased electron deposition was observed when an injected pellet undergoes increased ablation in the core due to such electrons. It is considered that the contribution of the first of these phases, i.e., ablation, may be minor, therefore it remains to closely evaluate the other phases. In order to help understand this, it is intended to perform injections into #41777-like (with fast electrons) and #44614-like (no fast electrons) discharges to determine if the outward plasmoid drift significantly changes between these two scenarios. For this the fast-frame camera will be critical. The outcome of these experiments will be used to include a routine in the HPI2 code to account for such situations. For this, it will be attempted to simulate the fast-electron observations with the HPI2 code by modifying the contribution of the drift effect until agreement is reached.

Cryogenic pellet injection (PI) is widely used to fuel the core of magnetic confinement plasmas. PI can also serve as a plasma diagnostic, for example to locate fast-electron populations or to shed new light on plasma turbulence <ref> K. J. McCarthy, et al, Plasma Phys. Control Fusion 61 (2019) 014013 </ref>. For instance, preliminary studies on the effects of hydrogen pellets on radial electric fields, Er, and turbulence in Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heated (ECRH) discharges in TJ-II revealed that the level of core turbulence is reduced strongly for a short time scale (1 ms) after PI, this being followed by an increase in the evolution of plasma density and the recovery of the electron temperature.<ref> A. Goal: To study the effects of cryogenic pellets on Er and on plasma turbulence across the TJ-II.

Characteristics to be measured: Pellet ablation and penetration into the plasma using light diodes. Post injection radial deposition using Thomson Scattering. Plasma potential before, during and after PI with the dual Heavy Ion Beam Probe systems. Measurement of core plasma density fluctuations with the same system. Measurement of edge plasma turbulence during PI with Langmuir probes.

Plasma scenarios: Injection into low-density and medium-density ECRH plasmas with line-averaged electron density of ≤4x1018 m-3 and of 4 to 5.5x1018 m-3.

Expected outcome: The evolution and characterization of plasma turbulence before, during and after pellet injection.

Plasma core fuelling is a central element for the development of reliable steady-state scenarios. Plasma core fuelling experiments using pellets in TJ-II have shown that the radial redistribution of particles can be understood qualitatively from neoclassical predictions. HIBP measurements have provided the evolution of fluctuations and turbulent transport during pellet injection to address the fundamental question of how plasma profiles with hollow density profiles affect turbulent transport.
The goal of this work is to investigate turbulence during transient pellet induced regimes in ECRH plasmas exploring the influence of positive / negative gradient regions on fluctuations.

The influence of fast electrons, that reside in the plasma core of TJ-II, on pellet ablation and fuelling efficiency is a topic that was recently highlighted.<ref>K. J. McCarthy et al., Nucl. Fusion 57 056039 (2018)</ref> The work reported therein was part of the current effort to benchmark the stellarator versions of the pellet simulation codes HPI2 for TJ-II and W7-X.<ref>N. Panadero et al, Nucl. Fusion 58 026025 (2017)</ref> It was found that simulations made using the stellarator-adapted version of the HPI2 code did not fully agree with experimental observations for plasmas with a significant population of fast electrons in the core. While the presence of such a population gives rise to local enhanced pellet ablation it also appears to modify the fast outwards drifting of pellet particles and thereafter particle deposition and fuelling efficiency.<ref>K. J. McCarthy et al., accepted in Plasma Phys. Control.
